What is a HEIC file, and why does your iPhone create them?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11 arrived in 2017. It stores images with modern HEVC compression, so a photo takes up roughly half the space of an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality — which is exactly why Apple adopted it.
The catch is compatibility. Outside the Apple ecosystem HEIC support is still patchy: Windows usually needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store, many Android gallery and messaging apps refuse to display the files, and plenty of websites, upload forms and older programs simply reject them. That is the moment you need a converter.

Why won't Windows or Android open my HEIC photos?
Windows 10 and 11 can only show HEIC after you install Microsoft's HEIF image extensions, and the HEVC codec they depend on is a paid add-on. On Android, support depends on the device and the app: recent phones may even take HEIC photos themselves, yet messaging apps, older galleries or your work laptop still choke on them.
Converting to JPG sidesteps the whole problem: virtually every device, browser, website and app of the last twenty-five years opens a JPG. For photos you plan to share, print or upload, JPG remains the safest choice.
How the conversion works — and why your photos stay private
OpenMyHEIC runs entirely inside your browser tab using WebAssembly, built on the open-source libheif decoder. Your photos are never uploaded: each file is read, decoded and converted on your own device, and the result is saved straight back to your disk.
That design means no server queues, no file-size games and no privacy trade-off — there is nothing for us to store, because nothing ever leaves your computer. Once the page has loaded you can even go offline and keep converting.
